The 2007 award winning Asian Trail is a quarter mile long, 11-acre accessible pedestrian and animal habitat corridor for seven endangered Asian animals. Located near a main entrance to the 135-acre National Zoo. Design incorporates multiple sustainable design strategies including green gabion walls, green roofs, local native stone and plants, rainwater collection and re-use, and natural resin-based paths. The project was delayed for 2 months after the birth of the baby panda. The roof garden is part of the elevated walkway on top of storage, maintenance rooms, and exhibit space. The planted walkway gives the visitors a tree top view of the red pandas climbing in the trees.
